Gramps was a stray at a shelter in Texas and was in urgent need of rescue due to a broken leg and massive perineal hernia. RCBR got him last week and he went straight to a vet hospital where he could get round the clock care.
After getting all the fleas off him and clearing their schedule, the hospital was able to do his marathon surgery on Friday, 3/5/21. Gramps was the only thing happening at the hospital and all hands were on deck to do his surgery that ended up lasting 5 hours!
His hernia was the largest they had ever seen, where the opening was 4 inches in diameter and his intestines were coming out! They were able to place mesh to put everything back into place. His neuter then went fine (have to neuter when doing a perineal hernia repair otherwise the chances of the hernia returning are really likely).
His leg repair was another story! The vet could not get the pins to go through his bone. Then most of the screws kept snapping in half. He was finally able to get some of the screws to go in and put a plate in place.
Gramps was scheduled to come up on transport from Texas to Minnesota in a week's time, but due to the severity of his leg, the vet is recommending that he stay in-clinic for another month so they can monitor the healing progress of his leg first.
